17日ショパン国際ピアノコンクールのファイナリストや関係者の皆さんがワルシャワの大統領邸を表敬訪問され大統領ご夫妻は大変お喜びになられたようです。 歓待に使われた部屋はショパンが8才の時初めて公の席で演奏会を行った部屋だそうです。 意訳ですが書いておきます。
‘I am enormously moved that my wife and I have been honored with the presence of such distinguished persons at the Presidential Palace: wonderful artists which this room has not seen in such numbers in many years. We are meeting before the finals of the Chopin International Competition, on a distinguished day and in a distinguished place. […] This is the room in which the first concert of our most wonderful composer took place. It is here that the eight-year-old Fryderyk Chopin made his debut before an audience. […] Hidden in Chopin’s music is a special quality. It is this quality, expressed by the young pianists, which is in reality the object of the jury’s assessment. I think that the point is not playing technique, because you are all wonderful pianists and virtuosi, but rather that peculiar character of Chopin’s music. […] I see in it grain undulating in Polish fields, grass bending with the wind in the meadows, I feel in it the rhythm of the fight for freedom, the desire for an independent Poland. And it is this that is the most extraordinary in the music of Fryderyk Chopin: that everyone hears in it something dictated to him or her by the heart, that is associated with his or her country, with his or her life, with something that surrounds him or her. It is awkward for me to say this in the company of such superb connoisseurs of Chopin’s music. But I must admit to you that in my personal life, this means that his music has a soul. Each performer fills out that soul in his or her own way. […] At the Competition, performers from all over the world appear, but each one gives Chopin’s music his or her character, expresses his or her own peculiar emotions. Probably it is for this reason that not only specialists, not only Poles, but people all over the world love the Chopin Competition so much.’

大統領官邸にこのように著名な方々をお招きできる栄誉にあずかれて私と妻は大変感動致しております。 今までにこんなに多くの素晴らしい芸術家をこの部屋にお招きした事はございません。 ショパンコンクールのファイナルの前ですが、今日という特別な日（ショパンの166回目の命日）に特別な部屋で私たちはお目にかかっているのです。
この部屋は我々の最も愛する作曲家が8歳で初めてコンサートを行った場所です。 8歳のF.ショパンが聴衆の前で初めてデビューコンサートを行ったのがこの部屋です。
ショパンの音楽には表現できない気品がございます。 その気品が～今若きピアニスト達によって表現されておりますが～審査員のジャッジの基準とする所です。 私は思うのですが、そのポイントはテクニックの問題ではないと思うのです。 なぜならあなた方はすでに皆全員素晴らしいテクニックをお持ちのピアニストでいらっしゃるからです。 それよりもむしろショパンの音楽には特別のものが隠されていると思うのです。
私にはショパンの音楽の中にポーランドの大地に波打つ穀物畑や草地で風になびく草が見えるのです。 私にはショパンの音楽の中に「自由への戦い」や「独立国ポーランドへの渇望」のリズムが見えるのです。 そしてこれがショパンの音楽が他の作曲家と違う所です。
誰でもがショパンの音楽を聴くと心を動かされるものがあります。 我が祖国を、我が人生を、そしてまわりの何かを思い起こします。 これは「ショパンの音楽は魂を持っている」のだと皆様方に言わせて頂きたいのです。 それぞれの演奏者の方々がそれぞれのやり方でこの魂を表現していらっしゃいます。
コンクールには世界中から演奏家の方が参加されているわけですが、それぞれがショパンの音楽に自分の思いを込めてその感動を各自の思いで表現していらっしゃいます。 たぶんショパンコンクールが特別な人ではなく、ポーランド人だけでもなく、世界中でこんなに多くの方々に愛されるのはこれがその理由だと思います。

「Chopin's music has a soul.」という「important message」を我々になげかけていらっしゃいます。我々日本人はポーランドという日本とは異国の文化を学ばせてもらっているという畏敬の念をもっと持つべきなのかもしれないと思います。
